A naval town with a penguin colony on its edge

Simon's Town is easiest to meet through the penguins, but the town has its own reasons to stop. Cape Town Tourism calls it one of South Africa's oldest towns, situated 35km outside Cape Town, and describes a neighbourhood known for maritime history, beaches, water-based activities, marine wildlife and the African penguins.1 That list is a fair summary of what follows on this page.

The navy gives the town its character. Wesgro describes Simon's Town as the home of the South African Navy since the early 1900s, and the naval museum has an elegant clock tower.7,8 Boulders Beach in Simon's Town sits beyond the streets, and the park describes it as set in the midst of a residential area, one of the few sites where the endangered bird can be seen at close range.9

Think of the town as the part of a penguin day that is easy to skip and rewarding to keep. A day tour such as ours spends 75 minutes at Simon's Town with lunch and free time, which is enough for a meal and a short wander, while a visitor with a free afternoon can fill several hours here. The sections below are ordered from the shortest stops to the longest outings.

The sources give no opening hours or prices for these stops, so the table lists none; check each before you go.2

Museums for a short or wet hour

Three museums sit within the town, each with a different subject. The South African Navy Museum is managed jointly by the South African Navy and the South African Naval Heritage Trust, and Cape Town Tourism suggests 1 to 2 hours there for its exhibits and collections.2 It is the obvious choice if the weather is poor or the penguins have worn out the children.

Simon's Town Museum tells the cultural history of the people of the town and their connections with the Dutch East India Company and the Royal Navy.3 Wesgro calls it packed with memorabilia and worth an hour or two of browsing.12 The two museums together suit a slow afternoon, and they are a good counterweight to a morning of birds and boardwalks.

For something lighter there is the Warrior Toy Museum in St George's Street. Cape Town Tourism says it holds 4,000 model cars and 500 dolls and teddy bears, along with miniature railways, lead soldiers and Meccano.13 It is a small, specific stop, and children who like models will take to it. Check opening days before you go, since the sources here give no hours for any of the three.

Just Nuisance, the statue and the steps

The most famous resident of the town is a dog. Cape Town Tourism says the grave of Just Nuisance is at the top of Red Hill, a frequent stop for visitors, and that a bronze statue of the dog stands on Jubilee Square.4 The statue is the easy visit: it sits in the town and asks only that you stop and read it.

The grave is the harder one. The mountain steps begin on Barnard Street and lead up to the Navy Signals area where the grave is located.16 Cape Town Tourism calls it a tough climb up the steps to the top and says the view is well worth it.4 Take water, wear shoes with grip and keep it for a day when you are not racing the gate hours at Boulders.

A sensible plan separates the two. See the statue during the town stop of a tour day, and keep the grave for a day when the town is the plan and not the lunch break. If you do both on the same day as the colony, decide the order first, because the gate has fixed closing hours and the steps are not a place to hurry.

Simon's Town is also a boat town. Cape Town Tourism says a cruise to Cape Point with the Simon's Town Boat Company offers everything from whales in season and ocean caves to cliff faces and a view of Cape Point from offshore.28 It also lists a 2-hour kayak trip around Simon's Town that can see marine life and visit the Boulders penguins.5

The park's own rules shape what a boat can do at the colony. Its brochure says Boulders Bay is a penguin sanctuary where kayaks, boats and other vessels are not permitted to approach the beach, and that no lifeguards are on duty.29 Whatever a paddle trip shows you, it shows it from the water and not from the sand, so check with the operator what the visit consists of.

On foot, the best long outing is the hike. Cape Town Tourism says the hike above Boulders Beach and the Seaforth area runs up to the blockhouse and on to Black Hill, and that the round trip takes around 2 to 3 hours.6 The path runs through fynbos and landscape that Cape Town Tourism calls gorgeous. Plan it as a morning or late-afternoon outing, not something to squeeze between a lunch and a bus.

For children and for the evening

The Scratch Patch is the family favourite on the list. Cape Town Tourism says children can fill a bag with polished gemstones to take home.14 Next to it sits Cave Golf, an 18-hole underground golf course with rock halls and mineral displays.15 Together they can fill a rainy hour, and they sit well after the penguins, when the children have seen the birds and want something to do with their hands.

For an adult evening, the town offers a ghost walk. Cape Town Tourism describes a Simon's Town Ghost Walk of 2 hours that visits the Old Burial Grounds.11 It suits a visitor who stays overnight in the area and has finished with the colony for the day. The walk names the Old Burial Grounds as a stop, so check the meeting point and booking with the organiser in advance.

Penguin visits with children are covered on their own page, with the practical details. Here the point is narrower: the town has enough indoor and outdoor options that a family does not need to rely on the beach alone. Pick one active item and one quiet item, leave the rest for another day, and the visit will feel unhurried rather than overbooked.

For the town stop

A checklist around the colony

Timing3

  • Work backwards from the Boulders closing hour for your month10
  • Check museum opening days before you go2
  • Arrive early for parking in peak summer24

Outings3

  • Take water for the steps to the Just Nuisance grave16
  • Allow 2 to 3 hours for the hike above Boulders6
  • Ask the kayak operator what the penguin visit includes5

At the gate3

  • Carry a card for the Boulders gate25
  • Keep to the boardwalks at the colony26
  • Check the tide before you plan the beach27

Fitting the town around the penguin gate

Start with the gate. Boulders opens for entry at 08:00 and closes at 17:00 from April to September, and keeps longer hours in summer, from 07:00 to 19:30 in December and January.10 The park adds that times may change without notice.30 Whatever you plan in town should be built backwards from the closing hour in your month, not forwards from breakfast.

The simplest day is the colony in the morning and the town after it. Parking at Boulders is limited, so an early start helps, and a lunch and a museum in town fill the afternoon without any gate to beat.24 A visitor on a day tour has the opposite pattern: the record gives the colony 1 hour and the town 75 minutes, so pick one town highlight, such as the statue, and let the rest go.

Boulders Beach, Simon's Town, is a good place to start the day. If you are staying a few days, the town is a pleasant base for the whole coast. You can walk to the museums, ride the train in from the city, take a boat or a kayak, and go to the colony at the quiet ends of the day. The page on the train explains the rail route, and the page on the combined tour shows how the day runs.
