The essentials
Penguins are about the right size for a small child. African penguins stand approximately 68 cm tall, so a child at the rail looks at them almost eye to eye.5 The birds also make a noise that children remember. South African Tourism notes that the species used to be called Jackass penguins because of its distinctive braying, and a morning at the colony explains why.6 Boulders Beach penguins children can watch from the boardwalk, with an adult beside them.
The beach adds a second reason to come. Cape Town Tourism describes a popular family-friendly swimming beach where kids can climb over the boulders, explore the rock pools or swim in the water.2 South African Tourism calls the cove an ideal swimming spot for children because the ancient granite boulders protect it from wind and large waves.1 A child who tires of watching birds can turn to the rocks and the water without leaving the site.
Give the visit a loose plan. Start with the penguins while attention is fresh, then move to the cove and let the children choose what to explore. There is also an information stop: expert guides at the Boulders Visitors Centre give information about the penguins, which suits curious school-age children.7 Short, varied blocks of time work better than one long stretch in the same spot, and a snack break on the way between the boardwalk and the cove resets the mood.

Advice is drawn from SANParks, the City of Cape Town and Cape Town Tourism.
Water safety is the first job for adults. The SANParks brochure says Boulders Bay is a penguin sanctuary, that kayaks, boats and other vessels may not approach the beach and that no lifeguards are on duty.4 Cape Town Tourism adds that rangers patrol Boulders each day, and that alcohol and smoking are prohibited.12 Stay within arm's reach of small swimmers, and keep older children where you can see them.
Space on the sand depends on the tide. SANParks advises coming at low tide, because beach space at Boulders depends on it.13 A high-tide visit can leave a narrow strip for towels and bags, which is hard with young children. Check a tide table the evening before and choose your window with it. If the tide is wrong, spend the early part of the visit on the boardwalk and come back to the cove later.
Rules about the birds need to be said out loud before you leave the car. SANParks asks visitors not to touch or feed the penguins because their beaks are as sharp as razors.14 Dogs are excluded from the beaches.15 The national plan records penguins killed by cars, especially at parking lots close to the colonies, so hold small hands tightly between the car and the entrance.16 Keep children behind the barriers, since leaning over them is a documented problem.17
How long the outing is
Durations are the listings' own: 5 hours for both Cape Point and penguin half days, 6 hours for the Viator swim half day and 10 hours for the site's day tour.
The boardwalks make the colony easy for little legs and wheels. Cape Town Tourism says three wheelchair-friendly boardwalks were constructed to cope with the nearly 60,000 visitors who come each year.3 They wind through the dunes and vegetation and protect nesting penguins and their chicks.9 A stroller or a baby carrier suits the planks, though you should ask at the visitor centre about the right route for your particular wheels.
Arrive early if you drive yourself. SANParks warns that parking at Boulders is limited, so arrive early in the peak summer months.19 SANParks also lists gate times, with entry at 07:00 in December and January and 08:00 for the rest of the year, and warns that they may change without notice.20,21 An early arrival means cooler air for babies and fewer crowds on the planks.
The visitor centre is a useful stop for families. It gives children a reason to pause out of the wind, and the guides can answer the questions that a parent cannot. South African Tourism warns that the wind can pick up along the beach, so a hat and sunglasses will provide a buffer.22 Pack sun protection for infants, who cannot wear sunglasses, and a light layer for everyone.

This site's tour
Penguins plus the peninsula
The length of the outing matters more than the colony itself. The site's day tour lasts 10 hours and is listed from $52, with hotel pickup between 7:00 and 8:00. Infant seats are available on request, with one person using one seat. That is a long day for a small child, so decide before you book whether your children can manage a full day with several drives. Visiting penguins at Boulders Beach with kids works best when the plan stays short and flexible.
Half-day listings are shorter. One Cape Point half-day listing runs 5 hours and is listed from $40, and a penguin half-day listing also runs 5 hours and is listed from $37. A Viator half-day tour with swimming runs 6 hours and is listed from $39. The penguin half day gives the colony 2 hours, against 25 minutes on the Cape Point half day.
On the full day, think about the pace. Lunch is not included and is bought at Simon's Town, where the stop lasts 75 minutes. Cape Point offers an optional uphill walk of 15 minutes to the lighthouse, with funicular tickets sold separately as an alternative. Children who tire easily can skip the walk, and you can use the pause to let them rest.

Cape Town weather can change a family plan. The nearest long record is the airport 29.3 km inland, so use it as a guide and not a reading from the beach.24 June averages a daily high of 19.2 °C with 88 mm of rain, while January averages 27.7 °C with 13 mm.24,24 Cape Town Tourism says winter is the rainy season and recommends an umbrella or raincoat.23 Pack for wind in every season, and keep a spare set of dry clothes for children who spend their time in the rock pools. Wet sand, cold water and a breeze add up quickly for small bodies, and a dry layer turns a grumpy ending into a cheerful one.
Seaforth Beach makes a good second stop. The City describes shaded, grassed areas for picnics and a beachfront surrounded by restaurants, vendors and curio shops.10,25 It recommends swimming only when and where a lifeguard is on duty, which gives families a supervised option that Boulders Bay lacks.18 Children can run on the grass and parents can sit down with lunch.
Keep a wet-weather plan in your pocket. Cape Town Tourism lists The Scratch Patch, where children fill a bag with polished gemstones, and Cave Golf, an underground course.11 Both are indoor and suit a day when the wind is wild. If you booked a day tour, the schedule will not change, so pack layers and snacks, and let the penguin hour carry the day.
