Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable, we had plenty of time at the sights, and the guide and driver made the whole day easy and fun.

It was a lovely, beautiful day. Our guide was excellent and the places we saw were incredible, and I would book the same day again.

As group tours go, this one could hardly have been better, with two cheerful characters up front who made the whole trip enjoyable.

Our guide and driver were professional, reliable and knowledgeable, and we had a fun, fascinating day with truly breathtaking places to see.

An excellent day with a great guide and driver, a vehicle that felt almost new and comfortable, and a trip that covered a lot of interesting ground.

Pick-up was prompt and on time. Our guide and the captain were informative and amusing, and one long day took in a good share of what Cape Town offers.
the day in brief
The day on this site is a pickup tour from Cape Town that stops at the Boulders Beach penguins and at Cape Point in one outing. The record lists about 8 to 10 hours with a live guide who speaks English, and the tour starts from $52, rated 4.6 from 4,137 reviews on GetYourGuide. The itinerary lines give the Boulders Penguin Colony 1 hour.
Boulders Beach in Cape Town is the draw this site is named for, and the park describes it plainly. It says the Boulders section of the national park has 3 beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks, built so that visitors can see the birds. The brochure adds that the penguins are best viewed from Foxy Beach, where boardwalks take visitors to the birds. That is the view this day is built around.
Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before for a full refund, and you can reserve now and pay later. The pages of this guide go deeper on the gate fee, the train, the day itself, the town next door and the penguin calendar. Prices and ratings stay live on the booking panel below. That is the whole offer: one day, one pickup and one price to check.

the colony
African penguins were not always here. The park brochure says the colony grew from just 2 breeding pairs in 1982 to about 2 200 in recent years, partly because less commercial trawling in False Bay left more pilchards and anchovies to eat. The small sheltered bays are partly enclosed by granite boulders that the brochure dates to 540 million years ago.
The setting is unusual. The park says the Boulders Beach penguin colony sits in the midst of a residential area, yet it is one of the few sites where the endangered bird can be seen at close range. The brochure also renames the species for the record: the birds were once called jackass penguins for their donkey-like braying, and are now African penguins because they are the only penguin species that breeds in Africa.
The rules follow from the closeness. The park asks visitors not to touch or feed the penguins because their beaks are as sharp as razors, and the brochure says dogs are excluded from the beaches. Boulders Bay is a penguin sanctuary where boats may not approach the beach, and no lifeguards are on duty.

other ways
You do not have to take a tour. South African National Parks says a railway service runs from Cape Town along the False Bay coastline to Simon's Town, and Cape Town Tourism names Muizenberg and Kalk Bay as stops on the coast ride. The station is not the penguin gate, because Boulders sits in a residential area, so the last stretch is by foot or by taxi.
Driving gives you the order of the day and the parking problem. Cape Town Tourism places Simon's Town 35km outside Cape Town, and the park says parking at Boulders is limited in peak summer. Our page on the train explains the rail route, the hours Cape Town Tourism gives for it and the options for the last stretch.
A tour trades that planning for a schedule. If your day is short or you would rather not drive, a pickup day removes the transfer problem, while a train or car day lets you stay longer at the colony within the gate hours. Neither is better in general, and the right choice follows from how you like to travel.

the ratings
The listing has 4,137 reviews on GetYourGuide, rated 4.6, and the rating breakdown reads guide 4.7, transportation 4.7 and value for money 4.6. A sample this size tells you the operator delivers the outing it describes most of the time, and that guide and driver score a little above value for money.
What a score cannot tell you is how long you will stand at each place. The record lists the stops in minutes: 1 hour at the Boulders Penguin Colony, 1 hour at the Cape of Good Hope, 1 hour at the New Cape Point Lighthouse and 75 minutes at Simon's Town. On a day with that many stops, each one is short by design.
Read the newest reviews on the booking page with that in mind. They talk about the guide, the driver and the places visited, and the page cannot promise the weather. A rating is a good guide to the operator, while the questions of minutes, gates and lunch are what this site is for. Treat the rating as one input, and the minutes, the gate and the lunch as the other three.

the gate
Boulders is a pay point, and the gate charges a daily conservation fee that depends on who you are. On the park table for 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026, an international adult pays R245 and a child R120, while South African residents pay R55 and R26. That season has ended, so check the park's current table. The gate takes debit and credit cards only. It is the first number to check when you compare the cost of different days.
The gate keeps seasonal hours. From April to September it opens at 08:00 and closes at 17:00, and in December and January it runs from 07:00 to 19:30. The park says times may change without notice, and that parking is limited, so it asks visitors to arrive early in the peak summer months. Those hours set the earliest and latest sensible arrival, whichever way you travel.
The record for our day does not say whether park entry is included in the tour price, so ask the operator before you book and carry a card. Our page on the entry fee goes through each visitor type, the proof the gate asks for and how Boulders compares with the Cape Point gate. Fees change by season, so check the current table.

how the day runs
The itinerary lines list a pickup in Cape Town City Centre and a van ride of 30 minutes, then Bo-Kaap for 30 minutes, Maiden's Cove for 15 minutes and Hout Bay for 1 hour, with an optional seal island boat visit of 45 minutes for an extra fee. Chapman's Peak Drive follows for 20 minutes, and then the Boulders Penguin Colony for 1 hour.
After the penguins come Simon's Town for 75 minutes with lunch and free time, the Cape of Good Hope for 1 hour, the New Cape Point Lighthouse for 1 hour and Muizenberg Beach for 30 minutes. A van ride of 45 minutes returns the group to the city centre. Lunch is not included and is bought at Simon's Town.
Hotels within 10 km of the city centre are served between 7:00 and 8:00, and the tour sends the exact time a day ahead. Our page on the combined tour sets out each stop and compares the day with three other listings, so you can see how much of the clock goes to the penguins and how much to Cape Point. That is the quickest way to see how the clock is spent before you commit to a date.

The listing holds 4,137 reviews on GetYourGuide, rated 4.6.
The breakdown reads guide 4.7, transportation 4.7 and value for money 4.6, so the three scores sit close together, a steady picture for a day with so many stops.
cape point
Cape Town Tourism says the Cape Point reserve covers approximately 7,750 hectares, and the day gives the Cape of Good Hope and the lighthouse 1 hour each. The record says that at Cape Point you can ride the funicular, sold separately, or take an optional uphill walk of 15 minutes to the lighthouse. Check both legs of the journey before you rely on the train.
The Cape Point operator lists the funicular return ticket at R125 for an adult and R65 for a child, and says the ride saves an uphill walk from the car park to the old lighthouse. It also lists gate entry rates for 1 November 2026 to 31 October 2027, with R595 for standard entry for an adult, and says price increases take place each year on 1 November.
Add the extras up before you compare days. The tour price is a from price, and the gate fee, the funicular and lunch sit outside what the record lists, so budget for them. The guide pages on this site keep to the Boulders side of the story. Whichever you pick, the gate fee and the card requirement stay the same.

the calendar
The colony has a rhythm. The brochure says peak moulting time is December, after which the birds go to sea to feed, return in January to mate and nest from about February to August. Moulting and nesting fall in different parts of the year, so the colony looks different in December and in mid-winter.
Cape Town International, the NOAA station 29.3 km away, records a mean daily high of 27.7 °C in January and 18.5 °C in July, with 88 mm of rain in June. Those are airport readings, not Boulders' own, so treat them as a guide to the season. Those are the figures to put in the budget, next to the tour price.
Our page on the breeding and moult calendar walks through the year month by month, and the photography page explains what the light does at the colony. If you can choose your month, check the calendar first, because it decides what you will see on the sand and how busy the boardwalks feel. Whatever the final sum, the day gives you two famous places for one pickup.

who it suits
The day suits travellers who want the penguins and Cape Point without driving, and who are happy with short stops. The record lists a live guide who speaks English, and says infant seats are available on request, with one person using one seat. Mobility needs should be given at booking. Check each of those against your own plans before you pay.
Walking is part of the day. The record mentions an optional uphill walk of 15 minutes to the lighthouse, with the funicular as the alternative, and the park's boardwalks at the colony ask you to stay on them. If anyone in your group finds long days in a van tiring, remember that the itinerary lists van rides of 30 and 45 minutes.
If you want hours at the penguins rather than one, a different listing suits you better. A penguin half day lists the colony for 2 hours in 5, and a Cape Point half day lists it for 25 minutes. The table on the combined-tour page shows all four days with their minutes. Look at the table before you decide, since the minutes at the penguins range from 25 minutes to 2 hours across the four days.

wear and bring
Start with the gate. Carry a debit or credit card because the Boulders gate takes no cash, and bring whatever proof of identity your rate needs. The record says lunch is not included, so carry some money for Simon's Town, and consider water for the van rides between stops. Those two items are the ones the record makes explicit.
Dress for a day with several kinds of ground. The colony has boardwalks, Cape Point has a walk to the lighthouse, and the coast is open to the wind, so layers, a hat and comfortable shoes are sensible. The park adds that beach space at Boulders depends on the tide and advises coming at low tide, which is worth a look at the tide table.
Leave the dog at home, since dogs are excluded from the beaches, and leave the selfie stick in the bag, because the brochure asks visitors not to use selfie sticks through fences and near the penguins. A phone camera and some patience do the job, and a visit to Boulders Beach in South Africa rewards patience more than gear. The page on photographing the colony covers lenses, light and the mistakes to avoid.
Reserve it, cancellation is freethe honest view
This day is a sampler, and a sampler has limits. The penguins get 1 hour, Cape Point gets two stops of 1 hour each, and the rest of the clock goes to the coast road and the town. A visitor who wants a morning at the colony alone should read the half-day listings, which give the penguins up to 2 hours.
Check three things before you pay. Ask whether park entry is included, since the record does not say, check whether your hotel lies within 10 km of the centre, and decide whether you want the funicular, which is sold separately. Those three questions settle most of the surprises on the day. If the operator cannot answer one of them, that tells you something before you pay.
Then read the guide pages that match your worry. The fee page covers the gate, the train page covers getting there on your own, and the Simon's Town page covers what to do in the town. The free cancellation window gives you room to move the date if the forecast looks wrong. Come back to the booking panel when your plan is settled and the price will be live.
